Description
Fann was a princess of the Daoine Shí, or Fairy Folk, as the Tuatha Dé Danann were known in later times, and wife of the Manannan Mac Lir, the god of the sea and sister of Libán.
Fann was known as Fann the Pearl of Beauty and had powers of sorcery as did all of the Shí, the Fairy Folk.
She fought and had a falling-out with the powerful Manannan and as a consequence, her fairy kingdom was attacked by demons of the Fomor and in danger of being overrun. Cú Chulainn, the hero of Ulster, came to her aid and defeated them. Fann, in return, made good her word and became his lover, seducing him and initiating in the sensual ways of the Shí and the delights that await those mortals invited to enter the Otherworld.
Artist’s Note: I tried hard to capture the exquisite beauty of the model for Fann. She reminded me when I first met her of a Botticelli Venus and I painted her with Alessandro’s image in my mind.
