Description
Libán was a princess of the Daoine Shi, or Fairy Folk, as the Tuatha Dé Danann were known in later times and wife of Labra of the Swift Hand, the king of Magh Mell. She was sister to Fann, wife of Manannan and the lover of Cu Chulainn.
When the fairy kingdom of Fann was under attack by demons she was entrusted by Fann to carry a message to Cú Chulainn inviting him to return to the fairy kingdom and in return for his help to fight her enemies she would be his lover. Cu Chulainn first sent Laeg his charioteer to confirm the offer and then accepted the invitation and helped defeat the Fomor demons.
Artist’s note; In this second painting of the series I used as the model a girl who reminded me forcefully of the duality of women; the coy seductress and the sly manipulator of men. Difficult to manage in a painting but look carefully and it is there hidden in plain sight.
